A charming vision of heaven

A concert by the Madrigirls from London in the Singener Ekkehard Realschool

Three young and charming women from London visited Germany for the first time in September to delight their audience with romantic madrigals of the 16th and 17th centuries. One of these unusual concerts took place in the new Pausenhalle of the Ekkehard Realschool, organised by the Friends of the school and the Bodensee Madrigal choir. In Engen the group had another performance. While unknown in Germany, the Madrigirls are building a reputation in England and were described by critics there as "the latest singing sensation".

Having been described as looking and sounding like a vision of heaven, they fulfilled our expectations. The three women conveyed with great passion the beauty and vitality of the four hundred year old madrigals to the audience in Singen. English and Italian madrigals deal primarily with pastoral and romantic themes. The Madrigirls preserve for a contemporary audience the beauty and power of madrigals as well as interpreting very different modern pieces; their repertoire includes not only classical composers such as Thomas Morley, Orlando Gibbons, Thomas Weelkes and Claudio Monteverdi, but also folk songs like "She moved through the fair" and the Lennon-McCartney song "Honey Pie" which they performed with great skill. They sang not only in the clearest of voices and a capella, but refined their musical display with skilful acting and interesting commentary.

The people of Singen have to thank in part Wolfgang Doerr, member of the Bodensee madrigal choir, for this unique concert. He came across this phenomenal trio for the first time in Edinburgh two years ago, and invited them to the Bodensee. The audience were persuaded that he had landed a remarkable coup. One member of the audience said "London has again an excellent girl band - and one that is superior to the Spice Girls."
